SAN JOSE – District 3 Representative Richard Santos has been named chairman for the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors for 2010.

“As a lifelong resident of Alviso, I’ve lost my home three different times due to floods. I know firsthand the devastation that can result from property damage and the disruption to one’s family life. That’s why I continue to fight for important flood protection projects,” said Santos, “Providing high quality water and flood protection are responsibilities that require long term planning and investment. I’m looking forward to a challenging and productive year as board chair.”

Some of the most important priorities for Santos in 2010 include:

  • Public outreach
  • Transparency and open government
  • Public participation in board meetings
  • Water conservation
  • Flood protection
  • Securing stimulus funds

As board chair, Santos plans to exercise strong fiscal oversight during the water district’s budget process. In 2010, Santos will lead the board and the water district through the redistricting process and promote greater accountability and transparency.

Santos represents the board on the following committees: Association of California Water Agencies WateReuse, Coyote Flood Zone and Watershed Advisory, Landscape Advisory, South Bay Recycling, Santa Clara County Water Retailers Advisory Group, Santa Clara Valley Water Commission, and San Jose Anti- Graffiti and Litter Program.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District manages water resources and provides stewardship for the county’s five watersheds, including 10 reservoirs, hundreds of miles of streams and groundwater basins. Valley Water also provides flood protection throughout Santa Clara County.
