The following statement is from the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board Chair, Rosemary Kamei  on the PPIC Report which states a peripheral canal is the “best strategy” for saving the Bay-Delta ecosystem and ensuring a reliable supply of water for California.

“Today’s PPIC Report again brings attention to the fact that the current Delta conveyance system fails to meet the needs of the state’s people, environment, and our economy.”

“The water district continues to support a comprehensive water plan that invests in Delta sustainability, improved conveyance, greater water conservation, and increased storage.  Since we rely on the Bay-Delta to transport half our drinking water to Silicon Valley, we need a comprehensive Delta solution as soon as possible.”

“The severity of the situation is highlighted by the continued decline of the Delta ecosystem and drought conditions that have been exacerbated by court ordered pumping restrictions.  We urge the legislature to recognize the urgency of the situation and provide the leadership required to solve this crisis.”

The Santa Clara Valley Water District manages wholesale drinking water resources and provides stewardship for the county's watersheds, including 10 reservoirs, hundreds of miles of streams and groundwater basins. The water district also provides flood protection throughout Santa Clara County.
